Report from Hon. Secretary H Hodges

CHEPSTOW SOCIETY - May meeting Report.

The May meeting of the Society was its 68th AGM. But before the commencement of the formal business Members were given a short talk by Mr Frank Olding on the up-coming National Eisteddfod which is to be held at Abergavenny later in the year. He gave a concise history of the Eisteddfod and its origins in the preservation of Welsh culture and language. It is a festival of song, choirs, dance and above all poetry. The bardic ceremonial is of relatively modern foundation going back only to the late 19thC although it seems and looks much older. The highlight and the most coveted prize is awarded for Welsh poetry and the “Chairing of the Bard” when the winner is declared is at the heart of the festival. The History Societies are involved as we have an exhibit explaining some of the local history of the County of Monmouthshire to visitors on the Eisteddfod field. The festival at Abergavenny runs from 30th July to the 6th August.

After the usual break the meeting continued with annual reports and the election of officers for 2016/17. The Chairman thought that with membership again rising and meeting attendance also up it had been another good year for the Society.  Members had heard a successful run of talks on local subjects and this was our aim for the current year as well. Re-elections saw Mr Trevor Evans MBE returned as President and Mr Geoffrey Sumner as Chairman.  All other Officers and Committee members were also returned although the Chairman made an appeal for some new faces on the committee. The Next meeting is at the Drill Hall at 7.15pm on Weds the 15th June when the speaker for the evening will be Rose Hewlett  on  “Victorian Village life”. All are as usual welcome.
